FAQ
What are the new consumer trends in tourism?
The key to success in any industry is to stay ahead of the curve. If you don't think about the behavior of consumers now, you'll be behind. It is important to keep an eye out for emerging consumer trends.
Social media is the biggest trend in travel. Consumers share more information about where they go, what they do there, and what they feel about it. This is a sign that travelers are becoming more aware and vocal about the experiences they have at places they visit.
Twitter and Facebook offer users the ability to share photos, videos blogs, reviews, opinions, and other content with their followers and friends. These social media sites have a major impact on our understanding of travel destinations. Social media allows us to make better travel decisions by connecting with locals, and learning more about their culture.
Another significant change is the increase in mobile technology. Smartphones and tablets are being used more than computers by people. According to ComScore, smartphone penetration increased from 23 percent to 27 percent in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Mobile devices have changed the way we interact with information and communicate. There are many apps available that will help you with almost all aspects of your life, such as booking flights, ordering food or finding directions.
The way we travel is also changing thanks to mobile technology. From our phones, we can make reservations at restaurants, view maps, read reviews and book hotels. We can check our emails while we wait in line for restaurants or museums and can even listen to music while driving. All these new features allow us to travel more smarter, faster, & more efficiently.
Other than these two major shifts in travel, there are several other smaller trends. For instance, many people now use smartphones to search for attractions, events, or activities based in their local area. Foursquare and Yelp apps helped people plan trips based upon recommendations from their friends. These tools have the potential to revolutionize how we explore and experience cities.
There are also a growing number of companies offering services aimed specifically at tourists. These companies offer customized tours, transportation and accommodations as well other amenities. They make it possible for tourists to have a great time in the city and not have to worry about planning.
You can see that there are many opportunities available for travel marketers to capitalise on the latest trends. But it takes smart marketing strategies to identify which ones apply to your business and which won't matter much when attracting customers.
What do teens buy most?
There's a lot of data on consumer trends, but none is actionable for us. So we had a look at the data ourselves. We wanted information on the products and services that teens purchased. Then, we looked at how these purchases have changed in the past.
Even we were surprised at the results. Teens are extremely frugal in their shopping habits. They spend more on clothing than any other group apart from books. They also spend more money on technology than any other age.
Teens are also big spenders on mobile phones, computers, and tablets. These devices were purchased by almost 2 billion dollars last year by 13-17-year-olds.
It is notable that, while teens may spend a lot on electronic devices, they are not spending as much on apps. Apps account for less than 1 percent of teenage smartphone usage.
That means most of them are using smartphones to browse the web. They are using Snapchat and Facebook. They are avid gamers on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo.
They use their smartphones to make calls, view videos, and listen to music.
This is a very interesting trend. It suggests that teens are more dependent on mobiles.
They're also spending more hours watching TV. Teens spend more time per week watching TV than any age apart from those between 5 and 9.
There are many reasons that people watch TV. It's easier for them to control. They still prefer traditional media, even though they have digital options.
Another reason is the variety it provides. Switching channels is a great way for kids to have fun. They'll switch channels often and will choose whatever's on, rather than sticking with one channel.
It's also just plain fun. Teenagers love being able interact with characters onscreen, whether they're talking to their favourite celebrities or exploring new worlds where heroes can be found.
They're unhappy with the content they're watching, despite all this. Common Sense Media surveyed 90% of parents to find that 90% would prefer their children watch less TV if it meant more quality shows. Two-thirds of parents prefer their children to play video games rather than watch television.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise. We all know that obesity is more common in children who spend more time on TV. Harvard University has just released new research.
It found that for children aged 6 to 11, each hour more TV was associated with 2.5 points higher BMI.
We should start to think about ways that we can help our kids move away from the screen. It might be time to make sure our kids have healthier snacks, and more drinks.
Perhaps we should encourage them instead to engage in sports. The latest figures show that physical activity levels are declining across all age groups. We must change this.
There are many things that we can do to improve the health of young people. Simply look at all the evidence.

How To
What are some examples of consumer trends you can see?
Trends are predictable changes in consumption patterns.
They may not be predictable, but they do tend to follow a pattern. There are two kinds of trends: cyclical and secular.
In general, cycles are prone to repeat themselves over time. In other words, there have been three decades worth of economic growth. This means that consumers tend to spend more each year. But these cycles are usually short-lived - for example, the last decade saw a decline in spending because of the recession.
Secular trends are changes that take place over a longer time period and last long. Examples include technological advances such as the internet and mobile phones. These trends are often driven primarily by changes in lifestyles and tastes, and do not necessarily correspond with economic activity.
The most obvious trend is the shift toward online shopping. Consumers are shifting away from brick-and–mortar stores to buy goods online. Another major trend is the rise of eCommerce. eCommerce has seen an increase in popularity and sales than physical retailing over the past few years.
Another important trend is an increase in social networking usage. Social media is now ubiquitous and used by millions worldwide. Consumers use social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to communicate with their loved ones, share information and express opinions.
The third trend is the increasing use of wearable tech. Smartwatches are becoming increasingly popular, as well as smart clothing and fitness trackers. Wearable tech devices are a great way to track our health and wellbeing, monitor our environment, and communicate with the outside world.
